The good. The really, really good.

Okay, first of all I am going to tell you about these two books in honor of my friend Robyn.

The Spider and the Fly
The Spider and the Fly by Tony DiTerlizzi
We own this book, and we love it. Except for Calvin. It scares him a little, but the illustrations are amazing. And if you liked this book:
Kenny & the Dragon
You'll like this chapter book too, with tons and tons of his amazing illustrations. It is a retelling of The Reluctant Dragon. Fun to read aloud to younger guys and fun for second, third graders to read to themselves.
In fact, check out everything by Tony DiTerlizzi. He has an alphabet book that is hysterical. All his picture books are great.

Now, on to the best of the best of the best.

Maniac Magee
Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli
This is a classic and for a reason! It is such a good book. Read aloud to second, third graders. Older kids could read it to themselves. Amazing.
Freak The Mighty
Freak the Mighty, By Rodman Phillbrick. I know I've posted this before, but I'm doing it again, because you have to read it. You just have to.
Read aloud with fourth graders. Or maybe on their own, (It is scary in parts) but adults must read this book on their own. You must. Before you die. Absolutely.

And then, for you people who like a little romance and a little fantasy:
Read something by Patricia C. Wrede

To your girls you can read with (or have them read on their own) the Dealing with Dragons series.
Dealing with Dragons: The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, Book One

There are four books in this series. There are dragons (of course) and princesses and kings and knights and wizards and magic.

Then you and they can try:
Mairelon the Magician
Then read the sequel (With one of my favorite little romantic scenes ever)
The Magician's Ward
For teens and older, you will love:
Sorcery and Cecilia and the Enchanted Chocolate Pot (Which I couldn't get a picture of because Amazon is being dumb) and its sequels.
And for you to read aloud, or to have your kids read on their own:

Thirteenth Child (Frontier Magic)

Hope you have a great week!

  1. I am honored! I have told several of my friends about this blog--so thank you! I checked out Freak the Mighty and the second Penderwicks this week. We'll see if I can make it through them both before they are due back. Maniac Magee is one of the best ever. William devoured Ottoline and the Yellow Cat and Ottoline goes to school. Thank you again, Lindsay, for this blog!!!
