Winterling

I am not a major fantasy fan, and by that, I mean, I don't have a high tolerance for not so great writing or a not so great plot or not so great characters in that genre. Generally, I shut most fantasy by page fifty and move onto something else unless I am completely involved in the story. The last fantasy I read that I was really interested in was Tales of Umber series, beginning with Happenstance Found. I really like P.W. Catanese in general, if any of you want to try him out.

But that is not why I'm writing this post, so I must get to it. I couldn't put this fantasy down a few nights ago:
Winterling by Sarah Prineas.

It had a Tam Lin, almost The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe feel to it. There's a parallel universe that's causing problems for the people who live in our world and a need for a brave hero. There wasn't a romance, but there was almost a romance (at least in my mind), and it definitely feels like it will become a series. The ending leaves you hanging. I would have read on if the sequel already existed—I very much wanted to find out what happened to Fer and particularly, Rook. If you enjoy fantasy, and are looking for a well-written, fast-paced read, definitely give this a try.

(Isn't that a great name, by the way? Rook?)
